Sherlock called it a magic trick because people see and hear what they expect - they hear a commotion, look around, see a man sprawled on the pavement with impact head injuries and see just one person pointing to the roof of Barts with a horrified expression and within a few seconds you have a group of people who clearly remember seeing the man jump to his death when in fact they didn't see anything other than a "body" lying sprawled on the pavement. In Season 2, the moment the little Bruhl girl screams at the sight of Sherlock, you immediately know Moriarty paid for a Doppelganger kidnapper, and that for Moriarty's discredit plan to work, that Doppelganger had to completely disappear after kidnapping the children - so a corpse looking just like Sherlock had to exist before Sherlock pointed it out to Anderson in Season 3:1. So with Season 3, what do you include to reach the level of the previous seasons, and how far from canon can you deviate before fans are fuming about yet another "sell out" for the sake of merchandising profits et al? Ep 1 of course was all about how Sherlock Holmes faked his own death?Īs a fan, I wanted to know exactly how it was done, but as a writer I feel that leaving us guessing, as essentially happens at the end of The Empty Hearse, was the right way to go about it as it lets us each believe our own pet idea was right although there were only a very limited few methods of faking successfully, certain common essentials were obvious and given to the viewers, such as the "body switch". Not having psychic powers, nobody knew how many seasons would be made, so understandably they made sure to cover the Essential Four even if they were cancelled after Season 2.(On top of that both Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch have been working flat out to the extent that the mooted Season 4 trilogy won't even start filming until mid-late 2015.)

When it comes to Sherlock S3, the issue the writers (Steve Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who also appears as Sherlock's brother Mycroft) faced was that they'd already fired every big gun.

Conan-Doyle himself (and many Sherlockian researchers and fans) considered Hound to be the best Sherlock Holmes story - maybe writing it as a retrospective meant Conan-Doyle didn't feel the pressure to keep coming up with new stories for a living character and so he was able to enjoy the experience for itself. Fourth is the Hound of the Baskervilles: written due to public clamour by Conan-Doyle in restrospect by a grieving John Watson.

When you "do" Sherlock Holmes' stories adaptations, there are the Big Four that have to be done from the canon, starting of course with their initial meeting and of course The Woman (Irene Adler), plus the Reichenbach Falls in which Moriarty is killed.
